Top 3 Selling Regulators
The Right Tool for the Job: A Technical Comparison
By the UK Dive Store Technical Team
Buying a regulator is the most significant investment a diver makes. It is your primary life-support system. In the warm waters of the Maldives, almost any regulator will deliver air. But in the United Kingdom, where temperatures plunge to 4°C and silt reduces visibility to zero, your regulator needs to be more than just “functional.” It needs to be bomb-proof.
We are often asked: “What is the best regulator?”
The answer is always: “Where are you diving, and what are you doing?”
We have broken down our Top 3 Best-Sellers. These aren’t just sales figures; these are the units our instructors and staff trust with their own lives. We have analysed them based on Cold Water Reliability, Work of Breathing (WOB), and Hose Routing capabilities.
1. The Compact Traveller
Best For: The Hybrid Diver (50% UK / 50% Travel)
The Model: Based on the Apeks XL4+ Platform
For years, there was a trade-off: if you wanted a regulator capable of surviving a British winter, it had to be heavy, bulky, and made of solid brass. If you wanted a travel regulator, it was lightweight but would freeze instantly in a quarry.
The Compact Traveller class (epitomised by the Apeks XL4+) has changed the game.
The Tech Specs:
- Environmental Sealing: Despite its size, the first stage uses a diaphragm design that is completely environmentally sealed. This “dry chamber” prevents water from contacting the main spring, stopping ice crystals from forming and jamming the mechanism.1
- Weight: Weighing in at under 1kg (DIN version), it won’t eat your luggage allowance.
- Performance: It features an “over-balanced” diaphragm, meaning the gas pressure increases slightly faster than the ambient pressure at depth. The result? It actually breathes easier the deeper you go.
Why We Love It:
It removes the excuse. You don’t need to rent heavy “school” gear for your UK dives. This unit is perfectly at home on a coral reef, but robust enough to handle Stoney Cove in March. It is the perfect entry-level cold water regulator for the modern diver.
- The Verdict: Lightweight, but heavy on performance.
- Cold Water Rating: EN250A (Tested to <5°C).
2. The UK Workhorse
Best For: The Club Diver, The Instructor, The Future Tech Diver.
The Model: Based on the Apeks XTX50 / DST First Stage
If you walk along the deck of any dive boat in the Channel, 70% of the divers will be breathing a variation of this system. It is the gold standard of British diving. It is not the lightest, and it is not the prettiest, but it is virtually indestructible.
The Tech Specs:
- The Turret: The defining feature of this first stage (the DST) is the swivel turret.2 Unlike fixed-port regulators, the low-pressure ports rotate. This allows for optimal hose routing, keeping your hoses tucked tight against your body rather than bowing out like “loops of spaghetti.”
- Heat Exchanger: Look at the metal fins near the mouthpiece. That is a heat exchanger. It acts like a radiator, drawing warmth from the surrounding water to warm the super-cooled air rushing through the valve. It is a simple, passive system that drastically reduces cold-water freeflows.
- Venturi & Cracking Effort: The second stage features a Diver Changeable Exhaust (DCE) and a micro-adjust knob to tune the breathing effort. You can tighten it up to prevent freeflow on surface entry, and crack it open at 30m for effortless air delivery.
Why We Love It:
It grows with you. Today, you are diving a single cylinder. Tomorrow, you might be diving a twinset. The swivel turret makes this the perfect regulator for technical configurations (long hose routing). It is an investment that you will never need to replace, only service.
- The Verdict: Bomb-proof reliability for quarry and coastal diving.
- Cold Water Rating: EN250A (Exceeds standards).
3. The Elite Platform
Best For: The Deep Tech Diver, The Wreck Explorer.
The Model: Based on the Apeks MTX-RC / Military Spec
When performance is non-negotiable. This platform was originally developed in conjunction with the US Navy Experimental Dive Unit (NEDU) for extreme cold water diving. It was designed to function in near-freezing water at depths of over 60 metres.
The Tech Specs:
- Thermal Protection: The first stage looks different—it is encased in a satin-finish, forged body with heat-dissipating ribs. It has the highest freezing point resistance of any regulator on the market.
- Hydrostatic Over-Balancing: This unit delivers gas aggressively. At extreme depth, where air density usually makes breathing hard work, this regulator forces air to the diver.
- The Controls: The “RC” model gives you a large, tactile Venturi lever and breathing resistance knob that can be operated easily even with thick 5mm drysuit gloves.3
Why We Love It:
This is for the diver who pushes the limits. If you are entering an overhead environment (inside a wreck or cave) where you cannot simply swim to the surface, you cannot afford a regulator failure. This unit is heavy, industrial, and expensive, but it offers the ultimate peace of mind.
- The Verdict: Military-grade engineering for the civilian explorer.
- Cold Water Rating: EN250A (The industry benchmark for freeze resistance).
