APEKS
The Masters of the Cold and Dark
In the world of scuba diving, there are “holiday regulators,” and then there are “Apeks regulators.” Born in a garage in the North of England in 1974, Apeks was founded by two friends, Ken Smith Ainscough and Eric Partington, who shared a singular frustration: existing equipment simply wasn’t good enough for the cold, dark, and demanding waters of the UK. They combined their initials (A & P) and set out to create the peak of engineering excellence.
Apeks is a brand that doesn’t just understand cold water; they own it. Their factory in Blackburn, Lancashire, is a shrine to precision engineering. It is one of the few places in the world where a raw block of brass enters at one end and leaves as a life-support system capable of functioning in near-freezing water at extreme depths. Their ethos is “Technically Inspired,” and it shows in every component. While other brands focus on lightweight travel plastics, Apeks focuses on forged metal, heat exchangers, and environmental sealing.
The XTX50 regulator is widely regarded as the “workhorse” of the British technical diving community. Its reversible venture system and swivel-turret first stage (the DST) allow for the streamlined hose routing essential for twinset and sidemount diving. More recently, the MTX-RC—based on a design for the US Navy Experimental Dive Unit—has redefined what is possible in extreme environments, offering breathing performance that remains silky smooth even when the water hits 0.5°C.
For the UK diver, buying Apeks is a statement of intent. It says you are serious about your diving. It says you plan to dive year-round, regardless of the weather. It is a brand that has earned its reputation on the bottom of the ocean, not in a marketing boardroom. When you are 50 metres down inside a rusted hull in the English Channel, and the temperature is dropping, there is a profound comfort in looking down and seeing the Apeks logo on your regulator.
